How to Make CASCARONES – Easter Eggs

How to Make CASCARONES – Easter Eggs.  Cascarones are traditionally made in Mexico and Central America, cascarones are egg shelves filled with colourful confeti. The eggs are decorated with a multitude of colours and designs which make them so eye catching.

It is a great craft to make with the kids as they can explore their creativity side by designing whatever comes to mind.  When they are done decorating they can brake the eggs on each other’s heads, just be aware that it will be messy but lots of FUN.

So Lets Make Some Cascarones:

  • egg shells
  • food colouring
  • tissue paper (many colours)
  • markers
  • water paints
  • scissors
  • glue

Once you have emptied the eggs and rinsed the shells – see video on how to empty eggs

Now you are ready to start making cascarones.

1.- First place 2 cups of warm water in a bowl and add food colouring; a few drops depending on how deep you want the colour to be.  Do the same process for every colour you want to make.

2.-Now get your eggs shells and dip them in your coloured water bowls rotating them to make sure you get the whole egg. Tip, the longer you leave the shell in the deeper the colour will absorb into the egg shell. Once you have finished colouring your egg shell, set aside to dry.  It will take a few hours to dry but if you want to speed up the process you can dry them with a hair dryer on low.  Tip, make sure you hold the egg otherwise it is going to fly away.  You want to make sure the inside is dry because you are filling them with paper confetti.

3.-While the eggs are drying start cutting little squares of coloured tissue paper to make confetti. Next, cut out round circles about 2 inches in diameter these will be the covers for the eggs once you have filled them with confetti.

4.-Now that the eggs are dry,  fill each one with confetti.  Once your egg is filled with confetti it is time to cover it up.  Dab a small brush with glue and go around the opening part of the egg a couple of centimeters, then place cover on top and press the tissue cover around the egg to make sure is sealed. Think cup cake liners, a.k.a. cup cake papers.

5.-Now it is time to start decorating.  You can decorate these eggs with makers or water colour paints.  Sharpies work great.

That’s all there is to it. Now go and have fun creating awesome eggs !!
